Opinion: Everton embarrass themselves after £20m U-turn, latest report is laughable

|

Everton have made an embarrassing U-turn on Ademola Lookman with Simon Jones of the Daily Mail reporting that the 21-year-old will be made available this summer.

The Toffees rejected a £22m bid from RB Leipzig in August 2018, missing out on the chance to make 100% profit after 18 months, and Marcel Brands now looks incredibly foolish for turning down so much money for the left-winger.

Lookman has scored only four goals in 48 appearances since joining Everton from Charlton Athletic in January 2017 and endured a forgettable 2018/19 campaign under Marco Silva.

The England u21 international failed to score a single goal in 21 Premier League games this season, racking up only 601 minutes of football, and Lookman’s value is likely to drop as a result.

The Daily Mail say Everton want £20m for his signature, but it’s hard to see any club meeting that asking price given the year Lookman has had. Crystal Palace are the latest side to be linked with the wide-man, but it’s hard to see the Eagles making an out-of-form player their third-most expensive signing.

Everton want to cash in on as many fringe players as possible to put the money towards summer transfer targets, but Lookman might have to be loaned out to recapture his form and boost his value.

If chances will be few and far between at Goodison Park, the 21-year-old need to join a side willing to give him first-team football.
