Official: Everton midfielder ‘is out’ ahead of Newcastle clash

|

Gylfi Sigurdsson will miss Everton’s meeting with Newcastle United on Tuesday as he’s still not recovered from a groin injury. The 30-year-old missed Everton’s 1-1 draw with West Ham United on Saturday and won’t return until February now.

Carlo Ancelotti said in Monday’s pre-match press conference: “Gylfi Sigurdsson is out.” Everton’s clash with Newcastle is their last game of the month. The Toffees face Watford on February 1 and could have their the Icelandic international back for the trip to Vicarage Road.

Against West Ham, Ancelotti named Fabian Delph and Tom Davies at the heart of the midfield while Morgan Schneiderlin was on the bench. Sigurdsson’s place in the side won’t be guaranteed upon his return, however, as he’s been short of form this season.

The midfielder has scored just one goal and made only one assist in 21 league appearances. He’s enduring a 12-game run without scoring and a 17-game run without an assist, so Ancelotti might avoid bringing him back into the starting eleven next month.

Ahead of Tuesday’s meeting with Newcastle, Everton are currently 11th in the table with 29 points from 23 games and boast three wins and a draw from their last five.
