‘Not the kind of character we need’ – These Everton fans oppose fans’ suggested summer target

|

For far too long, we have neglected the striker position, but the suggestion of signing Olivier Giroud has not gone down well on the R/Everton Reddit page.

The French World Cup winner is likely to be on his way out of Stamford Bridge in the summer, as his contract with Chelsea does not have an option for another year and he has not done enough to convince the Pensioners to renew his deal.

We had looked toward the former Arsenal man to replace Romelu Lukaku when he was still at the Emirates, but in the end he rejected the chance to move to Goodison Park and stayed with the Gunners before securing his departure across London.

As his contract is looking like it will lapse and he will hit free agency in the summer, it has been suggested we should again look to bring him to Merseyside to add some experience to our attack.

The point being Giroud is a proven Premier League goalscorer and is a top target man, but so far this season he has only scored once in 21 top-flight games – coming against Tottenham in a 3-1 loss – dovetailed with nine in nine in the Europa League.

Three of his European strikes, however, came in one game when Chelsea smashed Dynamo Kiev for five, with the others coming against BATE Borisov, PAOK Thessaloniki, Vidi FC and Malmo.

If we were to try and sign the 87-cap international, we would not have to pay a transfer fee at least, but we would likely be on the hook for his £120,000 wage without him taking a pay cut.

The growing form of Dominic Calvert-Lewin would also be under threat with Giroud’s capture, a point some of you raised when the suggestion of starting another chase for the Frenchman was shared on the R/Everton Reddit page…
