Key Everton figure speaks very highly of summer signing, and its not who you think

Everton fans were gifted with a wealth of talent in the summer as Richarlison, Andre Gomes and Lucas Digne moved to Merseyside, but it’s Joao Virginia who has been a ‘revelation’ for Under 23s boss David Unsworth.

Virginia was a surprise signing for some, as the goalkeeper left Arsenal’s youth ranks to better his chances of making it in England having moved here when he was just 16-years-old.

Now 19, the Portugal youth international and captain is earning glowing reviews for his performances for the Toffees U23 squad, and it was claimed in August that he earned a standing ovation in the dressing room after making his debut – Virginia has kept four clean sheets this season.

Unsworth has now been quoted by Everton’s official website, adding to Virginia’s blossoming reputation by stating that the goalkeeper has been a ‘revelation’ in his side, who currently sit top of the Premier League 2 table after 15 games.

“Every successful team is built on a sound defence,” Unsworth said.

“We’ve had Joao [Virginia] playing in goal, too, who has been a revelation for us.

“Morgan Feeney and Tyias Browning have been fantastic. Lewis Gibson’s come back from injury, and we’ve had young Ryan Astley come in and perform very well.

“We’ve been strong in that area and we’ve defended excellently for the majority of the season.”
