“Just hope he can keep consistency” – Everton great backs 22y/o to be among the best in Europe

|

Everton great Kevin Campbell has backed Dominic Calvert-Lewin to be among the best strikers in Europe, so long as he can maintain a consistent level in his performances.

Calvert-Lewin moved to Goodison Park from boyhood side Sheffield United in 2016 for £1.5million, and was given the chance to be our leading forward following the departure of Romelu Lukaku a year later.

But scoring consistently never came easily to the former England U21 international prior to the current campaign, which has seen Calvert-Lewin fire home three goals in four appearances and now three in two under Carlo Ancelotti.

If Calvert-Lewin can keep writing his name on the scoresheet, Campbell has little doubt that the 22-year-old will become one of the best centre-forwards in Europe.

“He is a fantastic striker, in my opinion,” Campbell told the Express. “Fantastic with the head, clever in the box and sharp. I think he is going to be at the top in England and in Europe. He has all the qualities to be a top striker.

Do we need to sign another striker in January?

Yes

No

“He’s got three goals in his last two games and he’s proving to be a real handful. I just hope he can keep consistency in his game, and that the manager can trust him and give him a real boost because he looks like he could do it.”

Calvert-Lewin started 18 of his 32 Premier League appearances under Ronald Koeman and Sam Allardyce during the 2017/18 term, but could only find the back of the net four times.

The arrival of Marco Silva brought a marginally greater share of our attacking responsibilities with Calvert-Lewin favoured in the opening line-up of 19 of his 35 league appearances, though his minutes on the field reduced by 99 despite scoring twice more.

Calvert-Lewin is already on 1,115 minutes and a career-high eight goals for the campaign this season, having opened 13 of our 20 league games, of which he has only missed two.

In other Everton news, Ancelotti has confirmed that he will be without a midfielder when we face Manchester City, but hopes he can feature at Liverpool on Sunday.
