“He would get the best out of this Everton squad” – Toffees icon backs rumoured Silva successor

|

Everton icon Kevin Campbell has backed AFC Bournemouth’s Eddie Howe to get the most out of the current Toffees squad, should he replace Marco Silva.

Sky Sports have linked Howe with the manager’s position at Goodison Park should club chiefs decide to part ways with Silva after 59 games in charge, after defeat at home to Norwich City on Saturday heaped further pressure on the Portuguese.

Howe is a strong contender to replace Silva if the axe falls, as the former Burnley boss is still favoured by some Toffees board members after previously considering him for the position.

Sky add that the Cherries being on a run of one win in seven Premier League games may see that Howe is more open to moving to Merseyside, after being reluctant to leave the Vitality Stadium in 2016 when we eventually opted to bring Ronald Koeman in from Southampton.

David Moyes is also understood to be a strong contender to replace Silva, with our former boss out of work after being fired by West Ham United in 2018 and potentially able to come in on a short-term deal until the summer.

Campbell, though, has called for the board to do all they can to hire Howe if they decide to part ways with Silva, after boos rang out around Goodison Park before supporters joined Norwich fans in singing ‘you’re getting sacked in the morning’ on Saturday.

“Once the fans turn, at Everton especially, I think Marco Silva is done,” Campbell told Jim White on talkSPORT. “His stats are actually worse than Ronald Koeman’s right now!

“I like the look of Eddie Howe – I really do. He has done a fantastic job at Bournemouth, and he is a young manager. I think he would get the best out of this Everton squad.”

Howe returned to Bournemouth in October 2012 after a year-and-a-half in charge of Burnley, and has since helped the Cherries to secure promotion from League One to the Premier League and established the south coast side in the top-flight.

After a 16th placed finish in their maiden Premier League season, Bournemouth finished ninth in 2016/17, 12th in 17/18 and 14th in 18/19.

Despite their bottom half finish last season, the Cherries scored more goals than all but the top-six with 56, but a leaky defence that allowed 70 goals – the third-worst in the division – ensured they took 13 wins, six draws and lost 19 times.
