Explained: Why Cenk Tosun turned down Galatasaray to stay at Everton on deadline day

Cenk Tosun was linked with a move to Galatasaray on transfer deadline day but ended up staying at Everton and Haberturk have revealed why. Tosun was expected to leave over the summer after falling down the pecking order, but he’s making the matchday squad under Marco Silva and recently featured in the EFL Cup.

The 28-year-old was surplus to requirements during the tail-end of last season but has been open in his desire to stay at Goodison Park. So when Silva allowed Tosun to speak to Galatasaray, the Turkish international rejected their approach. Haberturk say Tosun also didn’t want to play for Besiktas’ rival.

Galatasaray parted company with Kostas Mitroglou and Mbaye Diagne and targeted Radamel Falcao and Tosun to offset the loss. Gala were successful in bringing Falcao to the Türk Telekom Stadium, but they were forced to turn their attentions elsewhere after being rebuffed by the Blues striker.

The Super Lig side ended up signing Florin Andone from Brighton & Hove Albion instead. Tosun is now competing with Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Moise Kean for minutes and could have a backup role to play under Silva this season.
