Explained: Why Cenk Tosun rejected a move to Qatar

Cenk Tosun looked on his way out of Everton over the summer after falling down the pecking order, but the 28-year-old has been steadfast in his desire to stay at Goodison Park.

According to Milliyet (h/t Sport Witness), Tosun was linked with Al-Gharafa SC but turned down a move to Qatar as his wife was reluctant. He rejected a sizeable payrise to stay in England and still hopes for more minutes under Marco Silva.

The Turkish international has made just two appearances in all competitions this season, racking up a meagre 51 minutes of playing time – Tosun has spent the majority of the campaign as an unused substitute.

He has Dominic Calverrt-Lewin and Moise Kean ahead of him in the pecking order, but Everton’s lack of goals this season could see Silva consider a change. The Toffees have scored just five goals in six Premier League games while being shut-out in 50% of their matches.

Tosun hasn’t been prolific since making the switch to Merseyside either – nine goals in 45 appearances – but he’s doing his best to save his Everton career. Silva has given him rare opportunities, so time will tell if the out-of-favour striker can become a regular in the future.
