Explained: 25 mins of football since January, Everton man out of favour under Carlo Ancelotti

|

Tom Davies was an unused substitute in Everton’s 3-2 defeat to Arsenal and hasn’t played a lot of football in recent weeks. Carlo Ancelotti preferred Andre Gomes over the 21-year-old when making a midfield substitution on Sunday which highlights how much Davies has fallen down the pecking order.

The England u21 international has struggled for consistency, leading to criticism from supporters, and it’s finally cost him his place in the starting eleven. Now Ancelotti has Gomes, Fabian Delph and Morgan Schneiderlin at his disposal, Davies is a last resort option.

Davies has made 21 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring two goals. The midfielder was a regular for Everton between October and January, featuring in 16 consecutive Premier League games, but he’s been short of playing time in the last five weeks.

Ancelotti gave Davies seven minutes from the bench in Everton’s 2-2 draw with Newcastle United (January 21), omitted the 21-year-old from the matchday squad in Everton’s 3-2 win over Watford (February 1), gave him 25 minutes from the bench in their 3-1 win over Crystal Palace (February 8) and left him on the bench in the Arsenal defeat.

Whether he’s given the nod against Manchester United on Sunday remains to be seen.
