It’s not often that just one man shines when you beat a team 22-0 as Everton did when they faced ATV Irdning out in Austria as our training camp came to a close, and it’s fair to say that Kieran Dowell certainly edged it for some given his own performance on the day.

Plenty of others stood out for different reasons as well, Ademola Lookman’s hattrick showed his worth, but that’s the kind of performance that saw Everton spend big money on him so hopefully, that’ll help him settle now and we’ll get the best from him in the future and not RB Leipzig.

Given relative age (20-years-old) but game experience, for many fans Dowell stole the show and really proved his worth. Those who have followed his progress through our youth system in recent years – he joined us aged 7 – have long tipped him for big things and he made his first-team debut back in the Europa League in December 2014 against FK Krasnodar. He had to wait until the 2015/16 season for his next chance and he made his Premier League bow against Bournemouth in April of that year as a late substitute. The following May he made his starting league debut against Norwich.

The 2017/18 season saw him move to Nottingham Forest in August of that season and he went on to make 36 starting appearances, seven substitute showings and returned ten goals. Having impressed at the City Ground plenty of fans were hopeful he would return and get a shot in the first team this season and Marco Silva may now realise the kind of talent we have on our hands given his showing at the weekend – even if he didn’t get on the scoresheet himself.

Leighton Baines opened the scoring against ATV Irdning as he connected with Dowell’s cross. It was another delivery from Dowell that caused chaos in their box and saw Mason Holgate make it 2-0. Dowell delivered the corner for Michael Keane to head home, but the referee ruled that one out. Keane wasn’t to be ignored as he made it 3-0 two minutes later as Dowell made it a hattrick of assists and he continued to play his part and be a handful for the remainder of the game until he was substituted off.
