Everton have confirmed that Mason Holgate is still recovering from a ‘shin injury’ ahead of Sunday’s Premier League meeting with Wolverhampton Wanderers. Carlo Ancelotti said in the Blues’ pre-match press conference on Friday that he “will check” on Holgate’s fitness before making a decision whether to include him in the squad.

The 23-year-old missed Everton’s 1-1 draw with Southampton and hasn’t trained much in the days leading up to Sunday’s match, but Ancelotti is willing to give Holgate until the eleventh hour to be available. He’s been a key player at the back this season and played his part in Everton conceding only two goals in four games since football returned in England.

Ancelotti said in his press conference: “I think it will be the same for Holgate. I think he can train tomorrow and we will check tomorrow.” The £12.15m-rated centre-back has made 31 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring one goal with three assists. He’s been preferred over Michael Keane and Yerry Mina by Ancelotti, but it remains to be seen how fit he is.

Wolves are no slouches. The Midlands outfit are sixth in the Premier League table with 52 points, five places and seven points better off than Everton, and they’ll have home advantage.
