Over the weekend there was conflicting reports as to whether Everton had approached Jose Mourinho.

The former Real Madrid and Chelsea boss is currently out of work and whilst he has been heavily linked with moves to both Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain, Mourinho is yet to commit his future to a new club.

The Liverpool Echo suggested that Everton should ‘sound out’ Mourinho, publishing the following ahead of the weekend: ‘Jose Mourinho is the world`s most successful football manager.

And if Everton are genuinely ambitious about restoring former glories they should at least sound him out’

They went on to add: If the Everton owners really want to make a statement of intent they should target Europe`s absolute elite.

Reports in the British media over the weekend claimed Everton had made contact with Mourinho, however Sky Sports believe this not to be the case.

They fall short of denying Everton’s interest, but do state that Mourinho would prefer a move to Manchester United if they decide to replace Louis Van Gaal.

Speaking to Sky Sports in April, Mourinho said: ‘I am not in a position to turn [jobs] down, I am in a position to analyse. I am in a position to be open to any club or national team.

‘I have to be honest, if possible I would prefer a club but I must analyse to see what is best for my career and to be back with everything I have. I would prefer [to be in England]. I love the country, I love the football here, my family is very stable and happy.’
