Everton have been linked with a move for Sergio Romero this summer and The Sun say Manchester United have placed him on the transfer list, so we have a decision to make whether to renew our interest before the window shuts next month (October 5).

Romero was David De Gea’s backup last season, but Dean Henderson is now second in the pecking order, so the 33-year-old looks on his way out of Old Trafford. We tried to sign Romero earlier this summer and thought we’d missed out on him to Aston Villa, but now he’s available if we’re willing to make a move.

Which club did Everton loan Cenk Tosun out to in January?

How good is Romero?

Pretty darn good. The Argentina international has made 61 appearances in all competitions for Manchester United (2015 – present), conceding only 27 goals and keeping an impressive 39 clean sheets. Romero has won 46 (75.4%) of those games, drawing seven (11.5%) and losing only eight (13.1%).

He’s been a good omen for United and has a wealth of experience from his stints at Racing (4 appearances, 7 conceded), AZ Alkmaar (112 appearances, 111 conceded, 48 clean sheets), Sampdoria (74 appearances, 80 conceded, 25 clean sheets) and AS Monaco (9 appearances, 7 conceded, 5 clean sheets).

Romero is a fantastic shot-stopper, but Henderson is highly-rated and looks to have a bright future, so United have no choice but to opt for youth. This is good news for us, however, as we could solve our goalkeeper woes.

Is he better than what we have?

Yes. Romero has been a safe pair of hands for United since 2015 and is a better goalkeeper than Jordan Pickford, Joao Virginia and Jonas Lossl right now.

Pickford can’t stop making individual errors and conceding soft goals, Virginia was woeful out on loan at Reading last season and Lossl has been frozen out entirely, so Romero would be an improvement on the aforementioned trio.

Summary

Romero is in the last year of his deal at Old Trafford, so United need to cash in while he still has value otherwise they risk losing him for nothing in 2021. CIES Football Observatory value the 33-year-old at €1m (£0.9m) while Transfermarkt value Romero at £2.5m, but it remains to be seen how much he’d cost us. He won’t break the bank regardless.
