Everton saved from ‘massive’ £50M transfer mistake

|

Everton have potentially dodged a ‘massive’ bullet by failing in their pursuit of Atletico Madrid forward Matheus Cunha with Wolves closing in on completing a move for the Brazilian for around £50 million, according to reports

Everton have struggled to find a replacement for Richarlison since his move to Tottenham Hotspur in the summer but were reportedly targeting a move for Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha in January.

However, according to Fabrizio Romano, the 23-year-old is now close to completing a move to Wolves on an initial loan deal with an option to buy of around £50 million in the summer.

Everton have really struggled for goals this season, only managing to score 11 times in their opening 15 Premier League games.

But signing a player like Matheus Cunha was never going to be the answer, especially at such a high price if they want to keep him at the club.

Since joining Atletico Madrid from Hertha Berlin in 2021, Cunha has only managed to score 7 goals in 54 appearances in Spain. He has also not managed to score a single La Liga goal this season and has struggled to solidify his place in the starting lineup.

Although Cunha could still be a success at Wolves under Lopetegui, if Everton were to have completed a move for the Brazilian, it probably would not have worked out very well for either party.

Should Everton have signed Cunha?
