Plenty of Everton fans have been discussing midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson on social media this week following his impact off the bench in the Merseyside derby on Sunday evening.
The 30-year-old played the final 30 minutes as he replaced debutant Anthony Gordon and picked up the highest match rating of any Toffees midfielder, landing a 7.0 from SofaScore.
He managed to win all of his duels, provided one key pass, one cross and had a 100% pass accuracy, which is rather impressive considering plenty seem to think he’s finished at Goodison Park.
Does Sigurdsson have a future at Goodison Park?
Yes, start him!
Maybe from the bench
No, sell him ASAP
Sigurdsson has divided opinion this season with substantial pressure being put on his back having cost the club a whopping £45m in the summer of 2017. However, he’s now valued at just £20.25m.
This season the Icelandic playmaker has featured 30 times in all competitions where he has provided only two goals and two assists, via Transfermarkt.
Some supporters believe he made a decent impact against Liverpool, claiming that the formation suited him and that he’d be better coming on as a substitute more often whilst others still think his career is done in Merseyside.
Here’s what has been said…
He did, we were on back foot and he got us going forward.

Actually created our first chances when we was on

I agree, the formation suited him today. He had instructions and I think he stuck to them. Surprised me tbf too! The defence was solid tonight. Coleman for me motm. Get this middle of the park problem sorted & strengthened & let’s see what comes!

I agree, though wasnt hard, our midfield was poor tonight, too slow too close down and terrible in posession.

Gylfi is alright. He’s played under too many managers in too many positions the last few seasons. Also not his fault Walsh massively overpaid for him.

I think just having a generally experienced players, and at that point was the right move he’s not incapable he’s just not what we’re looking for in the long term

Yeah, agree, thought he added the creative spark we needed, used Richy well to set up counters 👍🏻
— Gary Barnes (@GaryBarnes1878) June 22, 2020
He’s a good player to bring late on. Pace isn’t as much of a factor at that stage of a game.

Decent if unspectacular. Didn’t really notice. The match was pretty dull. 😂
— Andreas Wätt (@Wattawildworld) June 21, 2020
Thought he was excellent
— Ben™ (@eireben02) June 21, 2020
Was like a completely different player, thought it was game over when I saw him coming on the wing
— Tom Rigg (@TomRigg12) June 21, 2020
Battled, always runs and try’s but he’s absolutely hopeless when we’re the team trying to dictate play and create chances. Best moving on in the summer.

Did more than Iwobi has this season
Let’s face it with the teams left to play we’ll be lucky to get top 10.
Trust Carlo to get his team in the next transfer window and offload the let downs!

Added that bit of quality we were lacking at times. Did well
— Carl Hughes (@JimmyBoogaloo) June 22, 2020
Alot better when he comes off the bench, everyone becomes his pace and he tries to prove a point. Id keep him there
— Dean Mc (@dmj_87) June 21, 2020
Better than his usual performances. Doubt he’s going anywhere next season so I’d rather he build on that and actually affect games going forward
— Pog (@Poggymac87) June 21, 2020
Found his level. Impact sub. Actually scratch that, reasonable sub and may grab just a couple of goals from outside the box.
— Julie (@JulieHob1878) June 21, 2020
Im not sure you could call them challenges. Pathetic the way he goes into tackles and I’ve never seen him sprint getting back into position when he’s caught out.
