Everton midfielder to miss CRUCIAL England clash

|

Everton midfielder, Idrissa Gana-Gueye is set to miss Senegal’s crucial clash with England in the World Cup Round of 16 after earning himself a suspension for picking up too many yellow cards.

The 33-year-old has had a rather disappointing time since rejoining the toffees in the summer transfer window from Paris Saint-Germain for around £8 million. However, he has started in 10 consecutive Premier League games for Frank Lampard’s side since re-signing.

Although out of form, the midfielder was still selected to be part of the Senegalese national team for their World Cup fixtures against the Netherlands, Qatar and Ecuador.

Gana-Gueye started his side’s first match against the Netherlands as they were unlucky to run out 2-0 losers thanks to two late goals from Everton-linked, Cody Gakpo and Ex-Everton midfielder, Davy Klaassen. However, in the 96th minute, Gana-Gueye earned himself a yellow card after a clumsy challenge, leaving him on a tightrope for their second game of the tournament against hosts, Qatar.

Senegal put in a much-improved performance against Qatar and ended the game 3-1 winners, meaning they would have to beat Ecuador in the 3rd match to secure knock-out football.

Although Sarr’s first-half penalty was shortly followed by an equaliser from Ecuador and Brighton midfielder, Moises Caicedo, Chelsea centre-half, Kalidou Koulibaly would convert after Idrissa Gana-Gueye’s free kick to see Senegal through to the last 16.

However, 4 minutes before the goal, Gana-Gueye had put in yet another clumsy foul, earning him a second yellow card of the tournament, meaning he would be sidelined for his side’s round of 16 clash.

With England securing 1st place in their group with a 3-0 win over Wales in the evening, Senegal will now have to face the 3 lions on Sunday without one of their star midfielders.
