Everton could make lose £20 million on ‘failed’ signing

|

Everton may be forced to sell midfielder Jean-Phillipe Gbamin for as little as £5 million in January due to his contract situation, handing the club some hefty losses.

Gbamin joined Everton in the summer prior to the start of the 2019/20 season under then-manager Marco Silva for a reported fee of £25 million from Bundesliga side, FSV Mainz 05.

The Ivorian played two games during his first season on Merseyside before picking up a thigh injury in training, keeping him out of action until January of 2021.

However, just before his estimated arrival back into the first team, he suffered another injury which required surgery, keeping him out of action until the end of the season.

He was expected to return for the start of the 2020/21 season, but suffered ANOTHER setback, injuring his Achilles tendon in training, leaving him sidelined until November.

In a 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace at Goodison Park, Gbamin make his comeback to the first team, coming on as a substitute for James Rodriguez late on for his first appearance since August 2019.

But just a week after his return, he was put out of action AGAIN due to a knee injury.

He returned to the set-up again in October 2021, starting a match between Everton and Wolverhampton Wanderers at The Molineux.

After appearing just 8 times for the toffees over 2 seasons, the 27-year-old has had 2 loan spells with CSKA Moskow in Russia and Trabzonspor in Turkey, where he has performed decently.

According to 16saat, Everton could be willing to sell Gbamin for as little as £5 million in January due to his contract coming to an end in the summer. His current club, Trabzonspor are reportedly the most interested [via HITC sport].

Gbamin’s injury record has obviously been a major factor, but his Everton career can only be seen as unsuccessful considering the monstrous figure paid for him.
