Europa League-bound outfit keen to offer Everton star a route out of Goodison – report

|

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is keen to offer Phil Jagielka a route out of Goodison Park with the centre-back’s contract set to expire, according to Football Insider.

They are suggesting the Gers have set their sights on our veteran defender as a potential replacement for one of Joe Worrall or Gareth McAuley, as the pair are set to leave Ibrox in the coming weeks.

Former Liverpool captain Gerrard is currently assessing the possibility of enticing Jagielka to ditch the Toffees this summer.

The 40-cap former England international’s current deal on Merseyside will expire on June 30, but there had been murmurings that he would be sitting down with club chiefs in the comings days and weeks to discuss extending his Royal Blue stay into an 18th season.

Jagielka has only made seven appearances under Marco Silva, though – all in the Premier League – and Football Insider have suggested that Gerrard is weighing up an offer for the 36-year-old to take on one last challenge by joining a side set to compete in the Europa League next term.

Rangers have already secured their place in the second-string UEFA club competition, and will enter the Europa League in the first qualifying round – this season’s competition saw fixtures played on July 12 and 19, 2018.

If Jagielka does not feature against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday and decides to leave Everton, his Toffees career will close on 385 games, with 19 goals and eleven assists to his name.
