Ebbrell first joined Everton as a player in 1986, making a total of 207 appearances between then and 1997, even being part of the squad to last win a trophy for the club in 1995. He retired in 1999 after picking up an ankle injury whilst playing for Everton, which got gradually worse over his career, leading to him retiring from football whilst playing for Sheffield United.  [via John Ebbrell – Wikipedia]

The Bromborough-born midfielder took up his first role outside of professional football by taking up the role of Chief Scout at Everton under David Moyes but left 3 years later in order to pursue a role in football agency.

In 2008, Ebbrell took up his first coaching role, becoming a coach at Tranmere Rovers, being promoted to Centre of Excellence Manager in 2010.

His success at Tranmere Rovers led to him rejoining Everton, where he had spent the majority of his playing career, as an academy coach.

Ebbrell took charge of Everton’s U18 side in early 2016 and was later appointed manager of the U23 side for the 2016-17 season. During his stint managing the U23 side at Everton, he experienced quite a bit of success, winning two Premier League 2 titles in 3 years, winning his second in April 2019.

After a few successful years as U23 manager, he was promoted to the role of Head of Academy Coaching at EFC and had the job of overseeing the academy coaching programme.

Ebbrell will join Oldham Athletic as assistant manager and will join former Everton U23 head coach and centre-half, David Unsworth, who was appointed as manager at Oldham last month.
