Former England left back Leighton Baines has tipped youngster Mason Holgate for a big future in the game following his development over the last 12 months.

Tipped as one for the future with his potential by Everton as we brought him into the Development Squad from Barnsley last season, solid performances in pre season impressed manager Ronald Koeman enough to give him his first team debut in the Premier League opener against Tottenham Hotspur last weekend, and Baines has predicted big things for the youngster if he keeps his feet on the ground.

Speaking to the evertonfc.com Baines said of the 19 year old.

‘He (Holgate) has been around us long enough and has featured heavily in pre-season, and he has handled the whole thing well. He`s already earned the trust of the players and the manager – that`s why he was out there.’

As for his debut performance against Spurs, he went on to add.

‘He`s done himself the world of good with that performance and I`m sure he`ll feature a lot throughout the season.’

Certainly done himself no harm so far, but can’t expect too much too quickly as ever when it comes to youngsters as eventually he will have a mare but then it’s about how he responds to that, learns and bounces back.
