‘A hard cycle to break’ – Lots of Everton fans have been discussing potential unwanted record

|

Everton managed to beat Chelsea two-nil on Sunday despite Gylfi Sigurdsson missing from the penalty spot midway through the second half.

Thankfully the ball fell kindly to the Iceland international so he could blast home his 12th Premier League goal of the season and draw level with Richarlison as our top goalscorer.

It was, however, his third miss from the spot this season, accounting for a successful hit rate of just 40%, after misses against Watford and Fulham earlier in the campaign.

Should the 29-year-old miss another penalty this season, he would land himself one of the most unwanted records in Premier League football, as no player has ever missed four in a single season.

Alan Shearer has missed three in a season before, so has Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Teddy Sheringham, but no player will have missed more than Sigurdsson if he cannot bury the next penalty he takes in the league – so long as it’s this season.

When our man’s potential unwanted record was shared on the R/Everton Reddit page, this is what some of you had to say…
