Yannick Bolasie at Everton – what went wrong?

|

Despite joining Everton with a lot of expectations on his shoulders, Bolasie’s time on Merseyside ended up becoming very underwhelming. But what could have been for the winger?

Bolasie joined the toffees from fellow Premier League side Crystal Palace in August 2016 for a fee believed to have been a mega £28 million on a 5-year contract.

The transfer was not confirmed as the club’s record signing at the time, with Romelu Lukaku’s transfer from Chelsea in 2014 believed to be more expensive [via Sky Sports]

He made his debut for the club coming off the bench in a 2-1 away win over West Bromwich Albion.

The winger played 15 Premier League games for Everton during his first season, scoring his first goal against Burnley and also providing 4 assists.

However, he would suffer a serious knee injury, keeping him out for the rest of the season.

He would make a return halfway through the 2017-18 season but would fail to make an impact, struggling for consistent game time.

Due to him falling out of favour, he would spend the next two seasons on loan at 3 clubs.

The first season he would spend on loan at Aston Villa in the Championship, helping them to promotion to the Premier League.

Half-season loan spells at Anderlecht and Sporting Lisbon would follow for Bolasie but neither would be very successful.

He would spend the first half of the 2020/21 season at Everton before leaving on loan again, moving to Middlesborough under Neil Warnock.

With his contract expiring at the end of last season, he left the club aged 32, only appearing 32 times in 5 seasons on Merseyside.

Considering how well he was performing for Crystal Palace before his move, Evertonians can be nothing but disappointed about how his Everton career turned out.
