‘Wasn’t the most pressing matter’ – Silva’s demand lands varied reactions from these Everton fans

Marco Silva has instructed Richarlison and Yerry Mina to improve their English, as the Everton manager demands that all of his players are able to communicate in the same language, via quotes by The Guardian.

Richarlison is understood to have been told upon his arrival at Watford more than two years ago that he would need to adopt the language when he joined Silva at Vicarage Road, but the boss feels the Brazil international’s development has not been near the levels he would like.

The Portuguese head coach would also like to see Mina take up the language at a faster rate, as he feels the Colombian centre-back and Richarlison’s ability to speak English will help their efforts on the field, along with in their regular day-to-day life.

“Richarlison is not as good as I’d like, but he’s trying every day. Mina also,” Silva said. “With Richarlison, Mina and Bernard, it’s a little bit better because they have had more time. But with Mina and Richarlison we would like more from them.

“Their levels are a little bit better [than when they joined], but not like we would like. This is something we demand from them because this is one of the keys for them to adapt faster, and to understand everything that’s happening around them every single day.

“Not just on the pitch but at Finch Farm and during a normal day in his life, it would help. That’s what we demand from them and it’s up to them to keep working, because it is one of the keys for them to perform better and to have a better knowledge of what’s happening around them. For Richarlison and for Mina even more, because of the position he plays, it is really important.”

Summer signings Moise Kean and Jean-Philippe Gbamin are not thought to be of concern to Silva at present, as the Italian and Ivory Coast international have already displayed a greater ability to speak English than Richarlison when he joined Watford.

“[Kean] can understand more English than Richarlison did when he first arrived in the Premier League”, the boss added, while “the English of JP is really good”.

Not all of the Goodison Park faithful have reacted well to Silva’s comments, though, as some Everton fans have shared on Reddit that the boss must give Richarlison and Mina time to learn English.

Others have sided with the Portuguese head coach, as they consider the player’s ability to communicate in one cohesive language a vital benefit that will help to improve results.
