Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has claimed this weekend that Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye is 100 times better than Manchester United counterpart Fred as speculation continues about his future at Goodison Park following Paris Saint-Germain’s late January attempts to secure his signature.
With Everton shining man for man compared to the Old Trafford outfit as we stuck four past them in our last meeting, it was clear who won the midfield battle and earned their wages during that game, and speaking ahead of what became our scoreless draw with Crystal Palace at the weekend, former Arsenal legend Merson decided to pick Gueye out for praise.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday programme (28/4 – 12.50pm) whether his intention was to praise Gueye or simply criticise Fred, he had some harsh worsd.
“I look at their players and I don’t want to dig out Fred that he’s not good enough for Manchester United. The lad at Everton is 100x better than him. Gueye’s 100x better than him. £52 million, he’s not like he was a free. I’m not a Man United fan, but I was embarrassed. It was cringeworthy against Everton.”
Gueye’s importance to manager Marco Silva’s style is clear for all to see and the one point that should be taken from Merson’s words is the fact Fred cost them £52 odd million. PSG laughably offered under £30million in their attempt to steal a deal and whilst Fred has age on his side, PSG shouldn’t be entertained unless they come back with £35million plus if we want to compare.
