The EFL Trophy got underway with the first group games played this week.

Premier League and Championship U23 – or are these U21? – teams were involved once again.

Not that all these ‘age group’ sides involved had players entirely falling into that age bracket with several overage players permitted to feature so the aims of ‘young English talent’ being involved in them not exactly the case…

Premier League sides Chelsea, Tottenham and Everton were beaten. The Blues and Spurs by Plymouth and Luton on penalties, respectively. Notts County saw off the Toffees in normal time.

Rotherham took Manchester City to a penalty shootout but on this occasion the Millers weren’t able to see off a topflight side as City ran out winners on spot kicks.

Another of the Premier League sides in action were West Ham, who shared five goals with Swindon as the Hammers won 3-2 at the County Ground – Swansea also saw off another League Two side when beating Cheltenham.

Here’s a round-up of the EFL Trophy results with one game to take place.
