Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has certainly found himself amongst the headlines in the campaign of 2017/18.

Following his big money move from Sunderland back in the summer of 2017, his stock quickly rose with his England exploits and establishing himself as the countries No 1, but a high profile clanger in the game against Liverpool earlier in the season has dogged him, and Newcastle recently only built on that.

Fans are somewhat mixed on his performances but he’s become a very easy go-to for pundits sadly.

With a clean sheet kept in Sunday’s Premier League clash with Chelsea, that will do his confidence the world of good, especially given all the calls for him to lose his England jersey.

Former manager David Moyes has taken a different approach recently when asked about his development – insisting people should stop treating him like the finished product yet given his age at 25-years-old which is considered young in the modern game.

“When I had Jordan at Sunderland I always thought he was number one. Vito Mannone was in at the time, got injured, gave him a chance to get in. When Jordan got injured for a few games and I put Vito in, the minute Jordan was fit I got him back in the team. I think Jordan needs to keep playing. I think Jordan Pickford makes saves and I think he’s made some mistakes, but he’s young. He’s still got a lot of development to go, I think, maturity-wise.”

With his critics shouting louder than his backers, it’s certainly a fair point from Moyes. 25-year’s-old is young for a keeper and most players aren’t set until around 27-28 these days with passion often getting the better of their head, and that is a major criticism of Pickford, but it’ll come.
