Former Tottenham and Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood has had his say on the current situation down at the bottom of the league, and he believes “they have to stay in the Premier League, it is impossible not to

Speaking on SkySports’ SoccerSaturday, the 53-year-old believes that Everton should have no problem staying in the Premier League and he believes that former Everton captain Duncan Ferguson would do better than what Frank Lampard is currently doing.

When it comes to squads, I think Sherwood is a bit wide of the mark, if it was strongest XI then I agree. Everton, player for player do have a better XI than six or seven teams in the league. England’s number 1 is in goal and you could argue only Alisson and Ederson are consistently better than Jordan Pickford.

In terms of defence and midfield, it has leaders and experienced heads in the likes of Conor Coady, James Tarkowski and Idrissa Gana Gueye, and they can help the youngsters like Ben Godfrey, Nathan Patterson, Amadou Onana and James Garner when he is back from injury.

Everton’s biggest issue is scoring and creating goals. They just aren’t good enough and do not create enough. We have recently seen Demarai Gray has the ability when he gets his head down, he just needs to do it on a consistent basis, and with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, we know he can be a 20-goal-a-season striker. We need to utilise his strengths and keep him wrapped in cotton wool when he is in training.

Neal Maupay and Dwight McNeil since their arrivals have been way below par. With McNeil still only 23 years old, time is on his side and hopefully, he comes good. Otherwise, he will be added to the list of players we have wasted money on. Anthony Gordon on the other hand thinks he has the ability but for me, he needs to come down a peg or two. After the rumours linking him with a move away all summer, I believe it has gotten to his head.

Last season he epitomised what we wanted as Evertonians. Fire and passion, head down, run at defenders and cause problems. This season, he has done none of that to note and that is what we need again from him and the rest of the squad.

Manuel Fernandes (what a player he was by the way) joined Everton on loan in January 2007. But which Premier League club was he initially on loan at during the first half of the season?
