Team news: Everton will be without 24-year-old against Manchester City

|

Everton will be without Jean-Philippe Gbamin against Manchester City on Saturday, as the 24-year-old remains sidelined with a quadriceps injury – Gbamin was ruled out for up to eight weeks when he picked up the injury in August.

The Toffees confirmed the news on their official website ahead of Wednesday’s EFL Cup clash with Sheffield Wednesday. His absence likely opens the door to Morgan Schneiderlin to start in midfield on Saturday if Andre Gomes isn’t fit enough to feature. Fabian Delph should partner him.

Everton haven’t seen a lot of Gbamin in his debut season. The Ivorian international has made only two appearances in all competitions and has missed the Merseysiders last six games. Gbamin’s only outings have come against Crystal Palace (August 10) and Watford (August 17).

He’s been out of action for nearly six weeks, missing Everton’s 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa (August 23), 4-2 win over Lincoln City (August 28), 3-2 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers (September 1), 3-1 defeat to Bournemouth (September 15), 2-0 defeat to Sheffield United (September 21) and 2-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday (September 24).

Gbamin’s return may not come until October if previous estimates about his injury are correct.
