Silva set for anxious wait as Everton dealt injury blow to £13.5m-rated man – opinion

Everton boss Marco Silva is set for an anxious wait over the international break, following Turkey head coach Senol Gunes confirming that Cenk Tosun has sustained a groin injury.

Gunes confirmed the blow while speaking with Turkish outlet TRT Spor, and noted that Tosun developed a knock in training on Wednesday as his side were preparing for Thursday night’s Euro 2020 qualifier with Iceland.

Tosun is now not expected to feature in the clash, which Turkey will be looking to take all three points in as they battle with France for the top spot in Group H.

The Blues forward is not likely to feature on Sunday, either, as Gunes’ side round out their qualifying campaign away to Andorra.

But Gunes expects Tosun to be fit for Everton’s next game against Norwich City following the international break, noting that the £13.5million-rated striker’s groin injury does not seem to be a serious issue.

“Tosun [is] injured,” Gunes confirmed. “During the last moment of training [there] was an opening in the groin of Cenk. It doesn’t seem very serious, but Cenk probably will not be in [the next] two matches.”

Who starts at striker against Norwich?

Cenk Tosun

Calvert-Lewin

Moise Kean

Richarlison

Tosun had featured in his country’s last four ties, scoring three goals, including the winner at home to Albania last month. He also netted a brace against Moldova earlier in the campaign.

News of his injury will offer Silva reason to be concerned until the forward returns to Finch Farm and can be assessed, as Tosun had just re-established his presence in the Portuguese’s plans before joining up with his country for the November fixtures.

After making one substitute outing in our first ten Premier League games of the season, Tosun featured from the bench at home to Tottenham Hotspur before starting at Southampton last time out.

His goal against Spurs – Tosun’s first of the season across all competitions – moved the 28-year-old level with Alex Iwobi, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Tom Davies as our fourth-top goalscorer in the top-flight.
