Should Tom Cannon start against Wolves on Boxing Day? – opinion

|

Everton youngster Tom Cannon has been on fire so far for the under-23s side, scoring 13 goals already in all competitions this season. Does he deserve to start ahead of Neal Maupay against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Boxing Day?

Cannon joined Everton at the age of 10 and has impressed at every age group that he has played at.

He made his debut for Paul Tait’s Everton under-18 team at the age of just 16.

During the 2019/20 season, Cannon scored 16 goals in 16 games for the under-18 side, as well as 4 goals in a 10-0 victory over Sunderland at Finch Farm.

Last season was the striker’s first full season as an under-23s player, in which he scored 8 goals in 23 games in as PL2 season in which the blues struggled for form in.  [via EvertonFC.com]

However, this season he has developed tremendously, netting 13 times already in all competitions, including 5 goals in 5 games in the EFL Trophy.

The 19-year-old made his debut for the first team in a 4-1 loss to Bournemouth in the EFL Cup and would score his first goal in a 5-1 win over Western Sydney Wanderers after tapping in from a saved Stanley Mills effort.

Cannon was born in Aintree but has represented the Republic of Ireland at youth international level.

Considering Neal Maupay has failed to make much of an impact since joining from Brighton and Hove Albion in the summer, Cannon surely deserves at least a place on the bench against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League on Boxing Day.
