David Unsworth gained his first – perhaps only – win as caretaker boss when Everton recovered to earn all three points against Watford on Sunday.

At two down, with time running out, the Blues were destined for defeat again but a penalty in added time put us ahead. However, there was still time in the 12 minutes of injury time for the Hornets to miss a spot kick of their own as the Toffees won 3-2 at Goodison Park.

Richarlison and Christian Kabasele had given Watford a two goal lead before Oumar Niasse beat Orestis Karnezis – a replacement for Heurelho Gomes after the visitors’ goalkeeper was forced off by injury – to give us hope.

Having equalised through a Dominic Calvert-Lewin header the Blues had the chance to go ahead in added time when Jose Holebas brought down Aaron Lennon, Leighton Baines made no mistake.

Former Blues midfielder Tom Cleverley was given an opportunity to deny us a crucial three points but he put his penalty wide.

A first win in five games might not make any difference to Unsworth’s chances of being appointed on a permanent basis but it took the Blues out of the relegation zone and into the international break on a high.

The proud former Everton defender was quoted post-match by the BBC: ‘Whatever will be will be. I have been the proudest man in the world to take charge for the last two weeks and no-one can take that away from me. I know nothing about it. I’m sure I’ll speak to the chairman and owner and I’ll keep giving my best for this wonderful club.’

We’ll now have two weeks, before travelling to Crystal Palace, to work on Ronald Koeman’s full time replacement; then again the ownership issues are of greatest concern at the moment really…
