Report: Transfer blow for Everton as Tottenham enter race for £50k-per-week midfielder

|

Everton have suffered a blow in their pursuit of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg with Tottenham Hotspur entering the race for his signature, reports Sky Sports. Southampton have no desire to let their £50k-per-week midfielder leave this month, but it remains to be seen if he’ll stay on the South Coast for another year.

The 24-year-old has impressed in recent weeks as Southampton climbed out of the relegation zone following seven wins and two draws from 12 games, but his future is uncertain as his contract is winding down. Hojbjerg has 18 months remaining on his deal and may not hold talks over an extension until the summer.

Tottenham want to pounce on the Danish international at the end of the season and would be deemed a more attractive proposition than Everton. Arsenal are also reportedly keen on Hojbjerg and may also be a preferred destination than Goodison Park.

The central midfielder has made 23 league appearances this season, racking up 1997 minutes playing time from a possible 2160. He’d be an improvement on Morgan Schneiderlin and Tom Davies, but Everton have tough competition to beat out.
