Report: Striker to leave Everton this summer

|

According to Phil Kirkbride of the Liverpool Echo, Boris Mathis is set to leave Everton this summer. The 21-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and isn’t signing an extension.

Mathis has failed to make an appearance in the Everton first-team since joining from FC Metz in 2017, resulting in a loan move to Northampton Town between January 29, 2018 – April 6, 2018. He failed to score in five games and had the loan cut short.

With Cenk Tosun, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison ahead of Mathis in the Everton pecking order, opportunities in the senior squad would be limited for the Frenchman.

As a result, Mathis has been played exclusively for the u23s, making only a handful of appearances and not impressing enough to earn a call-up. Everton have reportedly been trying to sell the striker for some time but have been unable to find a suitor.

Mathis is currently on trial with clubs in France, but time will tell if he can broker a move away from Goodison Park. He was a free transfer so the Toffees aren’t taking a big financial hit, but it’s another black mark on Steve Walsh’s record as Director of Football.
