Report: Everton targeting ‘the new Mesut Ozil’ with a hand in 77 goals in 70 youth games

According to Fotomac, Everton are interested in Erkan Eyibil and could battle Fenerbahce to procure his signature. The 18-year-old plays for Mainz 05 u19s and has represented Germany at u18 level. Sport Witness say Eyibil has been nicknamed ‘the new Mesut Ozil’ and has made a name for himself after contributing 77 goals in 70 games at youth level.

As per Transfermarkt, in 2016/17, the attacking-midfielder scored 10 goals and made seven assists in 23 u17 Bundesliga Sub/Sudwest games. In 2017/18, he scored 17 goals and made 20 assists in 24 outings. In 2018/19, he scored 17 goals and made six assists in 23 matches. He’s been outstanding at youth level and could have a bright future ahead of him.

Eyibil is out of contract at Mainz in 2020, meaning he could leave the club for almost nothing next year unless he agrees a new deal or is sold. Everton are hoping they can land his signature for cheap due to his contract situation and their pursuit for Eyibil’s teammate Jean-Philippe Gbamin, but it’s hard to see Mainz playing nice.

The report doesn’t state what his asking price is, however.
