Report: Everton offering another player a new deal, manager confirms in press conference

|

Dominic Calvert is set to sign a new deal at Everton, but the 22-year-old may not be the only player rewarded for their form this month. Leighton Baines could be handed a deal until 2021 and Carlo Ancelotti says it would be “good for us” if he signed it.

He told Evertonfc: “Our idea, the idea of the Club, is, ‘Don’t stop playing, stay with us for the next year’. We would like to keep him and are going to talk with him. It would be good for us if he can stay.

Does Baines deserve another contract extension?

Yes, if he wants one

No, it's time to move on

“Physically, he has no problem. It (Baines remaining beyond this season) depends on what he is thinking and whether he wants to continue. I think he wants to continue but it is his decision.”

Baines has made six appearances in all competitions this season, scoring one goal. Despite playing second-fiddle to Lucas Digne at left-back, the 35-year-old continues to impress when called upon and has proven himself to be a worthy deputy to the 26-year-old.

Baines recently gave an interesting interview that revealed his secret to longevity at Everton, admitting that he has to work harder than ever to come close to his physicality levels of the past.

Supporters are on board for the England international to be retained for another season, and it’s clear from Baines’ past comments that he would stay. Everton need a long-term option to compete with Digne at left-back, but they could get another 18 months out of Baines which is valuable.

The 35-year-old has made 417 appearances since joining from Wigan Athletic in 2007, scoring and creating 106 goals. Baines is content with a backup role under Carlo Ancelotti and hasn’t lost much quality despite his advancing age, so it makes sense to retain his services.
