According to Gazzetta dello Sport via Sport Witness, Everton are keen to bring Cengiz Under to Goodison Park and AS Roma are resigned to letting the 22-year-old leave.
Roma are having financial difficulties and are confident of making a profit through Under’s sale this summer. Whether he’s an improvement on Everton’s existing wingers remains to be seen, however.
The Turkish international has spent three years at the Stadio Olimpico after joining from Basaksehir for (€14.67m) £12.83m, making 85 appearances in all competitions, scoring 17 goals and making 12 assists.
Under has been short of form this season, however, scoring just three times in 20 games across the board, so he’s not exactly hot property in the transfer market. The fact his asking price is only €15m-€20m (£13.12m-£17.49m) after three years in Italy speaks volumes.
Everton are on the hunt for a new winger as Theo Walcott could be sold due to inconsistency while Bernard has been offered to Roma. The Toffees have been linked with Jack Grealish, Wilfried Zaha, Jesse Lingard and Yeferson Soteldo, but it’s unknown who they’ll end up signing.
Under Marcel Brands, Everton have been targeting younger talent to replace the ageing deadwood in the squad, so Under fits their profile. His form in 2019/20 is a worry, but he did contribute 16 goals in 33 games last season. if he can recapture that form, he’ll be a bargain at €15m-€20m.
