Report: Everton may have to battle PL rivals and Barcelona to sign £22m forward

|

According to the Daily Star, Everton are interested in Jonathan David and may have to battle Arsenal and Barcelona to procure his signature. The 20-year-old has been in fantastic form for KAA Gent and could be set for a big-money move to a European giant this summer. The Daily Star say David’s asking price is around £22m, but the growing interest is likely to see that figure rise.

Which club did Everton loan Cenk Tosun out to in January?

The Canadian international joined Gent from Ottawa in January 2018 and has gone on to make 83 appearances in all competitions, scoring 37 goals and making 15 assists. David has been outstanding this season and enjoying his best return since he moved to Belgium – 23 goals and 10 assists in 40 games.

It’s no wonder Everton are keen, but it remains to be seen if they can beat out interest from Arsenal and Barcelona. David’s incredible goal output isn’t contained to domestic games either. As per Transfermarkt, he’s scored 11 goals in 12 caps for the Canadian national team and doesn’t turn 21 until next January.

As per Transfermarkt, Gent’s most expensive departure was Sven Kums to Watford to £8.1m in 2016/17. David will smash that record. He has more than three years remaining on his deal with Gent too, so his asking price may surpass £22m this summer.

Marcel Brands has been trying to lower the average age of Everton’s squad by selling ageing deadwood and signing young equivalents. It’s why Mason Holgate (aged 23), Tom Davies (21), Alex Iwobi (23), Anthony Gordon (19), Richarlison (22), Dominic Calvert-Lewin (23) and Moise Kean (20) have been handed 11,223 minutes of football this season, as per Transfermarkt, so David would fit the criteria perfectly.
