Report: Everton man aspires to follow in the footsteps of rival’s legend

|

Everton midfielder Tom Davies has revealed that he aspires to follow in the footsteps of Steven Gerrard and be the modern-day version of the Liverpool icon, as quoted by the Mirror.

Davies has been likened to Gerrard in the past, and hopes that he can emulate what the one-time Champions League winner achieved but in the Royal Blue of the Toffees, as well as with England.

Gerrard was lauded during his career for his box-to-box qualities, as he stormed Anfield throughout his 17-year spell on Merseyside before joining MLS franchise LA Galaxy, having won two FA Cups, three EFL Cups and the 2000/01 UEFA Cup.

Everton-product Davies is reserved in thinking that he is of the same ilk as Gerrard already, but hopes that he can continue to develop to become someone as recognisable on Merseyside as the current Rangers head coach.

“He was a quality player,” Davies said. “To even be compared to him is just good to hear. He is a local lad – around the city, everyone knows him. If I can do that for Everton, that’s the idea. I’d love to do that.

“I wouldn’t say I’m exactly the same as him, but in my head I know I can be a top-quality player. My main focus is [on] improving my game – I feel like I can become a quality player.

“It’s about reaching the potential that I have. It’s in my hands to dictate that.”

We have better players

Davies endured a troubled start to the season as Marco Silva left the 21-year-old on the bench in four of the opening six Premier League games, but the England youth international has since started our last four in a row and scored the opening goal in Saturday’s win at Southampton.

His strike on the south coast was only his fifth in senior football, though, as he nears his 100th appearance with 96 to his name already across all competitions.
