Report: Everton linked with AC Milan defender, could cost £1.5m-a-year to sign

|

According to Calciomercato, Everton are interested in Cristian Zapata and could sign the AC Milan defender on a free transfer this summer. Zapata earns £1.5m-a-year/£29k-per-week at the San Siro and is out of contract in the coming weeks. The 32-year-old is not expected to extend his deal in Milan and will be unattached in July as a result.

Marco Silva may need to sign at least one central defender in the summer transfer window to replace those who could be leaving. Kurt Zouma has returned to parent club Chelsea and may not return to Goodison Park as the Blues have a transfer ban and are unable to sign his replacement. Phil Jagielka is out of contract this summer and could leave on a free transfer.

Zapata has made 148 appearances in all competitions since joining the Rossoneri from Villarreal in 2013. He’s represented the Colombian national team on 56 occasions too. As things stand, Everton will only have Yerry Mina and Michael Keane at centre-back for next season so the Blues should prioritise signing a defender.

Whether they need a 32-year-old free transfer to bolster the ranks next season remains to be seen, however.
