Everton could lose two central defenders from the first-team this summer – Kurt Zouma and Phil Jagielka – and are expected to shop in the transfer market for a replacement. According to Portuguese outlet O Jogo (h/t Sport Witness), the Toffees are interested in Pedro Álvaro after glowing scout recommendations.
Zouma has returned to Chelsea following a season-long loan spell while Jagielka is out of contract in the coming week, so Marco Silva will need at least one defender coming in the opposite direction. Alvaro, who has yet to make his debut for Benfica, is described as fast, strong and composed in possession. At 19 years of age, he’s one for the future but clearly Everton have high hopes for him.
The report states that Everton haven’t made an official approach for the teenager, but the Toffees are looking to ‘reserve’ the defender with a view to bringing him to England. Silva could be left with only Yerry Mina and Michael Keane at centre-back next season, but Alvaro could be fast-tracked if he signs positive signs in his development.
The Portuguese u19 international currently plays for Benfica B in the Ledman Liga Pro and has four years remaining on his contract.
