Diaz is the second Real Madrid forward being linked with the Toffees after James Rodriguez, but it remains to be seen if Carlo Ancelotti’s relationship with Los Blancos pays dividends.

Defensa Central say Ancelotti has held talks with Real president Florentino Perez and could be ‘key’ to a deal getting over the line. Diaz isn’t overly keen on leaving, however, which may be a stumbling block for the Toffees.

The Spanish u21 international has made 15 appearances in all competitions since joining from Manchester City in January. Diaz has spent his second season at the Santiago Bernabeu on the periphery, amassing only 40 minutes of playing time, so his long-term future at Madrid is uncertain.

Under Zinedine Zidane, Diaz is behind Gareth Bale, Eden Hazard, Lucas Vaquez and Rodrygo in the pecking order. He’s been left out of the matchday squad in five of Real’s six Champions League group games and 14 of their 18 Liga outings, so Everton are looking to capitalise on the situation.

Whether a loan move or permanent deal could be agreed remains to be seen, but there is a dialogue between the two clubs.
