According to Alicante Plaza, Everton ‘have contacted’ Elche over the availability of Gonzalo Villar. The 21-year-old joined the Liga2 outfit on a free transfer from Valencia in 2018 and has gone on to make 37 appearances in all competitions, scoring and creating three goals.

Everton have stiff competition for Villar’s signature, however, with Alicanta Plaza revealing that AS Roma have lodged a bid of £2.6m for the midfielder. If Everton want Villar, they’ll need to make an offer in excess of what Roma are willing to pay.

The Spanish u21 international spent three years at Valencia, having joined the club from Elche in 2015, but he failed to make a first-team appearance. Villar made seven appearances for Valencia u19s and 32 appearances for the reserves, but he opted to return to his former club in order to get regular football.

Villar is now getting the game time he was desperate for and has proven his worth on the pitch, but his future is uncertain amid interest from European clubs. Everton aren’t short on midfielders – Andre Gomes, Jean-Philippe Gbamin, Fabian Delph, Morgan Schneiderlin, Tom Davies – but the 21-year-old is clearly deemed worth signing regardless.

Time will tell if their pursuit is successful.
