Report: Everton ‘fielding enquiries’ for defender, club ‘hope deal can be struck’ in January

According to Phil Kirkbride of the Liverpool Echo, Everton are ‘fielding enquiries’ for Cuco Martina and ‘hope a deal can be struck’ in January. The 30-year-old is surplus to requirements at Goodison Park, but Marcel Brands has so far struggled to sell him.

Everton haven’t received a concrete offer for Martina, but Liverpool Echo say some clubs are considering making a move before the transfer window shuts. The right-back is out of contract in July and hasn’t made an appearance for the Toffees since 2018, so he won’t have a lofty asking price.

Getting Martina off the wage bill and trimming the playing squad is what Everton want, so they may accept very little from suitors. A training ground injury stopped him leaving last summer, but he’s since returned to fitness and is currently training with the first-team.

The Curacao international joined Everton from Southampton in 2017 and made 28 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals. Martina’s last outing came in Everton’s 2-1 defeat to Burnley (March 3, 2018) and he currently finds himself behind Seamus Coleman and Djibril Sidibe in the pecking order.
