Report: Everton defender expected to agree new deal in coming days

|

According to Liverpool Echo, Leighton Baines is expected to agree a new deal with Everton in the coming days. The 34-year-old had an uncertain future this summer as his contract was expiring, but Everton confirmed on their retained list that he had a new deal on the table.

Baines has yet to put pen to paper on an extension, but he could be committing his future at the Toffees soon. Should he stay on until 2020, Everton may turn their attentions away from other left-backs, while the likes of Antonee Robinson, Brendan Galloway and Matty Foulds might have to consider loan moves next season to get first-team football.

Lucas Digne is first-choice under Marco Silva, but Baines would be excellent backup. The England international no longer has his pace at left-back, but he’s an experienced defender who is content with a secondary role at Goodison Park. He made only eight appearances in all competitions last season, the last of which came in the Premier League against Wolverhampton Wanderers on February 2.

With Everton handing Baines a new deal this summer, they clearly feel he has plenty to offer in 2019/20 despite his advancing age.
