Report: Club “unlikely” to sign Everton man, 31 y/o set to stay at Goodison Park

|

Huddersfield Town are “unlikely” to sign Jonas Lossl on a permanent deal this summer, confirmed their chief executive Mark Devlin, meaning the 31-year-old looks set to stay at Everton.

Lossl re-joined his former club on loan in January after a lack of first-team football at Goodison Park and has impressed between the sticks in the Championship.

Should the football season be cut short now or delayed for weeks/months due to COVID-19?

Delay for weeks/months

End the season now

As per WhoScored, Lossl has made seven appearances this season, conceding 10 goals and keeping two clean sheets. He’s made 21 saves, four clearances, one interception and 228 passes with 60.1% accuracy.

Devlin didn’t deny that the Terriers are keen to sign Lossl, but he admitted that they can’t afford to match his wages and have doubts that he’d drop down a division permanently.

The Danish international’s return came about due to his love for the club, having spent two years at the John Smith’s Stadium, but Devlin is pessimistic about the chance of him staying.

He told Yorkshire Live: “I think it’s unlikely. Jonas was keen to come back to Huddersfield Town because he really enjoyed his time here and has a good relationship with the fanbase. He came here because he wanted to play football and he wanted to make sure he did everything he could to be in the international squad.

“In answer to the original question, my gut feeling is I think it’s unlikely. His wages would be above those we would normally be able to afford, given that he is obviously with a Premier League club. We love having Jonas here and it’s great to have him here – he’s a great character. But, being really honest about it, it is hugely unlikely we would be able to afford to keep Jonas past the end of the season.”

Lossl initially joined Huddersfield on loan from 1. FSV Mainz 05 in 2017 and made 40 appearances before turning the move permanent in the summer of 2018. The 31-year-old made 32 appearances as the Terriers suffered relegation, but his form in 2018/19 led to Everton snatching him up on a Bosman deal.

His aim was to dethrone Jordan Pickford in goal, but instead, he’s spent his debut season on the bench. With Huddersfield admitting defeat in their pursuit of Lossl, it appears he’ll remain an Everton player next season.
