Everton have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Everton Soares, with Alan Myers revealing the 23-year-old ‘will not be leaving Gremio’ in January. Newcastle United, Arsenal have also been linked with the in-form attacker, but it doesn’t appear any club will be successful landing his signature.
Everton has impressed in the Brazilian Serie A this season, scoring and creating 16 goals in 30 games while bagging six goals and assists in 12 Copa Libertadores outings. Since joining Gremio from Fortaleza in 2013, the left-sided forward has made 177 appearances, contributing 63 goals.
While Everton would improve the Toffees’ squad, his favoured position is an area Carlo Ancelotti’s already overstocked in. The Everton manager has Alex Iwobi, Bernard, Richarlison and Theo Walcott who can play on either flank, so he doesn’t need another attacker.
Everton wouldn’t have been cheap either. He has a £69m release clause but his asking price is believed to be around £46m. Gremio turned down Napoli’s offer of £27m in the past and aren’t budging on their valuation. Everton has three years remaining on his deal at the Arena do Grêmio, so the Brazilian club are in a strong negotiating position.
The January transfer window shuts on Friday evening, but it remains to be seen if Everton will make one last attempt to sign him.
