While the focus for Everton has understandably shifted from looking at players to managers in recent days following the surprise departure of Carlo Ancelotti to Real Madrid, possible transfer targets are still being mentioned in the press.

Pedro Neto is one, with the Liverpool Echo suggesting that the Wolverhampton Wanderers star has admirers at Goodison Park.

In the piece, it’s said Everton’s interest in Neto is a factor in the club’s interest in former Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo taking charge. According to reports, he and West Ham United boss David Moyes are the early frontrunners in the search for a new manager.

After selling Diogo Jota to Liverpool last summer and losing Raul Jimenez to a serious injury midway through last term, Wolves lost a massive portion of the attacking spark that saw them finish seventh for two consecutive seasons in the Premier League in 2019 and 2020.

Amid those challenging circumstances, it was Neto who emerged as the team’s attacking talisman. Wolves only scored 36 Premier League goals last campaign, with the 21-year-old netting five of them and setting up the other six.

Not only is Neto young and productive, he’s versatile, hard-working and is clearly on an upward trajectory in his career. It’s players in this bracket that Everton need to start targeting as they look to build for the long-term following Ancelotti’s exit.

Getting Neto wouldn’t be easy, even if Nuno was to take on the role of Everton boss, as Wolves would be unwilling to sell their new star man on the cheap. But the Portuguese would definitely add an exciting new dimension to the Toffees’ options in the final third and the possible arrival of Nuno would do no harm if the club is to make a play for the talented youngster.

Neto’s already at a bigger club than Everton, why would he go to the with much bigger clubs interested in him.
Everton can’t offer him anything Wolves can’t.
