Opinion: Why Marco Silva dropped Dominic Calvert-Lewin from Everton’s starting lineup

|

In Everton’s 2-0 win over West Ham United, Marco Silva dropped Dominic Calvert-Lewin and started Richarlison in attack. The 22-year-old was an unused substitute and watched Moise Kean brought on ahead of him in the second-half.

Silva’s tactical decision paid off with Richarlison grabbing an assist in Saturday’s victory, but Calvert-Lewin may now be unsure about his role in the first-team. The England u21 international was a regular at the start of the season, but he’s been dropped twice in the last four weeks and could struggle to get back in.

Calvert-Lewin has scored two goals in seven Premier League appearances this season, but he’s rarely posing a threat in games. As per WhoScored, the young centre-forward has created just one chance in 480 minutes of football and registered only four shots on target – one every 120 minutes.

And while Calvert-Lewin has been a decent target man for Everton, winning 35 aerial duels (47%) and being dispossessed only four times, he’s not having a positive effect in the final third – six completed passes per game on average and a 33% dribble success rate.

Richarlison, on the other hand, has contributed four goals, has a shot every 33 minutes and has created eight chances. So with Everton returning to winning ways at Calvert-Lewin’s expense, Silva may continue to leave out the Englishman.
