Opinion: Why Everton won’t agree deal for 19-year-old to join Newcastle despite reports

Lewis Gibson has been linked with a move to Newcastle United, but it’s unlikely that Everton will allow the 19-year-old to leave given his fine form in the u23s and great potential on Merseyside.

According to Craig Hope of the Daily Mail, Newcastle want to re-sign Gibson after the departure of Peter Beardsley – a coach accused of mistreating players who has been recently convicted for racially abusing others.

Gibson left Newcastle for Everton in 2017 and helped the Toffees win the Premier League 2 title last season. He also impressed with the first-team in pre-season over the summer, so why would he sold?

Everton aren’t going to let a player of Gibson’s potential leave, so Newcastle might be wasting their time pursuing him. The Blues paid £6m for the teenager two years ago, so he wouldn’t come cheap this time around.

Marco Silva may have told the Liverpool Echo in August the centre-back wasn’t ready for senior-level football, but that doesn’t mean he’s not monitoring his progress in David Unsworth’s team.

Gibson has been training with the first-team this season, so it’s clear that he’s not being forgotten about.
