Opinion: Standard Liege won’t sign £70k-per-week Everton man, here’s why

|

Kevin Mirallas is out of favour at Everton and is expected to leave before the overseas transfer window closes on September 2, but it’s unlikely he’ll return to former club Standard Liege. The £70k-per-week winger reportedly wants a move back to Belgium after struggling for form and playing time in England, but Standard no longer need him.

The Belgian outfit are currently third in the First Division A with nine points from their first four games of the season and are the joint top-scorers in the league (11). Standard signed Aleksandar Boljevic (Waasland-Beveren) & Anthony Limbombe (on loan from FC Nantes), and have Maxime Lestienne, Paul-José Mpoku & Mehdi Carcela-González at their disposal too.

This season, Boljevic (0), Limbombe (1), Lestienne (4), Mpoku (1) and Carcela-Gonzalez (3) already have nine goals/assists between them in the league. Do Standard need to shell out £5m and £3.6m-a-year in wages to sign Mirallas? The 31-year-old’s form has been an issue in the last two years too.

He scored two goals in 15 appearances on loan at Olympiacos (2017/18) and two in 30 games for Fiorentina (2018/19) which may be why he isn’t getting much interest.
